Church Elnrode

The Lutheran church in Elnrode was built in 1817 and 1818 and consecrated on December 6, 1818. It is a classicist hall building, consisting of masonry with half-timbering on top and the indented tower in the west. Previously, the church shared a common place of worship with the Schlierbach parish. Both communities were increasingly dissatisfied with this and so, with the active support of the then pastor Wilhelm Bach, it was decided in 1816 to separate and build their own church in both places. At times, especially during the construction period, the prayer room in the old schoolhouse was used for services.

Over the years, several renovations were necessary, the last major renovation of the church building dates back to 2005/2006.

In the beginning, the services in the church were conducted without an organ accompaniment, there was simply a lack of money for the installation of an organ. The people of Elnrode had to wait 57 years for organ accompaniment during singing, and it was not until 1875 that an organ could finally be installed. Some renovations were also necessary, for example during the First World War the organ pipes had to be given away for metal extraction. It was not until 1925 that replacements were obtained. The last comprehensive renovation dates from 2007-2009.

The people of Elnrode and Strang have a special relationship with their church bells. According to legend, the citizens of Elnrode stole a bell from the church, which had been shared with Schlierbach until then, in a cloak-and-dagger operation in the summer of 1817 in order to hang it in the new church. In reality, this bell was awarded to the Elnroders in the partition treaty of 1816 anyway, and after a two-year legal dispute, ownership was confirmed by the courts in 1819. Since then, because of the successful prank, the people of Elnrode nevertheless proudly carry the nickname "bell thieves". At the beginning, they used the bell "Soli Deo Gloria" from the previously shared church and additionally the smaller school bell. These bells were later melted down, not least during the world wars. Today the church tower is home to two bells, one from 1925 called "Fight the good fight" and another from 1950, as a new acquisition after the loss of the war with the inscription "Peace on earth" as a wish for lasting peace.

Nowadays, the church is regularly used by the Lutheran parish of Elnrode-Strang for church services and other events. It is, as Rev. Wilhelm Bach remarked at the time of its inauguration, "a house of the Lord in the middle of the village".
